3D printing can feel a little confusing when you haven't worked with it before. Do I need a file? What kind of file? Can something be made from a photograph? How much will it cost?

You don't need to understand all the technical details before contacting us. If you know what you're trying to create, that's usually enough to start the conversation.

Here are some of the questions people most often ask about having something 3D printed.

1. I have an idea, but I don't have a 3D file. Can you still help me?

Yes. You don't necessarily need to arrive with a finished 3D file.

Tell us what you're trying to create and give us as much information as you can. That might include a sketch, photographs, measurements, examples of something similar, or simply an explanation of what you need the finished piece to do.

From there, we can look at whether an existing model could work, whether a model needs to be adapted, or whether something needs to be created specifically for your project.

Custom design or modelling work may be quoted separately depending on what is required.

2. I found a 3D file online. Can you print it for me?

Usually, yes.

If you've found a design on a site such as MakerWorld, Printables, Thingiverse, Creality Cloud or another 3D-model library, send us the file or the link and we can have a look at it.

We'll check whether the model is suitable for printing and whether the licence attached to the design allows it to be used for your intended purpose.

Not every downloadable file automatically allows every type of use, particularly where commercial use or modification is involved.

Print My File

3. What type of file do you need for 3D printing?

STL and 3MF are two of the most common file formats used for 3D printing, but there are other formats we may be able to work with as well.

If you already have a file, send it to us. You don't need to work out whether it is the “right” type before contacting us. We'll check the file and let you know whether it can be used as it is or whether anything needs to be changed first.

4. Can you create something from a photograph, sketch or existing object?

Sometimes, yes.

A photograph, sketch or physical object can be a very useful starting point, but whether it is enough depends on what you're trying to make.

A decorative object may be possible to recreate from good reference images and measurements, while something that has to fit precisely into another component may require much more accurate measurements or additional information.

Send us what you have and we'll assess the best way forward.

5. How much does it cost to have something 3D printed?

The cost depends on the particular project, including the size of the object, the amount and type of material required, how long it takes to print, the number of items required, and whether any additional design or finishing work is needed.

Once we have enough information about your project, we'll give you a quote before going ahead.

Print My File

6. How long does a 3D print take?

It varies considerably.

Some items may print within a few hours, while larger or more detailed pieces can take a full day or even longer on the printer.

The total turnaround time for an order can also include design work, preparation, multiple printed pieces, finishing and the number of jobs already in our print queue.

We'll give you an estimated lead time when we quote your project.

7. Can you print something that is bigger than the printer itself?

Potentially, yes.

If an object is too large to print as one piece, it may be possible to divide the design into several sections, print those separately and assemble them afterwards.

Whether this works depends on the design and how the finished object needs to look or function, so we would need to assess the model first.

8. What material should my item be printed in?

Tell us what the finished item needs to do and we'll help determine an appropriate material.

For example, we may need to know whether it will be used indoors or outdoors, whether it needs to be rigid or flexible, whether it will be exposed to heat, sunlight or moisture, and whether its main purpose is decorative or functional.

Different 3D-printing materials have different strengths, so the best material depends on the job.

9. Can you resize, change or recreate something that already exists?

In many cases, yes.

An existing 3D model may be able to be resized or adapted, while a physical item may sometimes be recreated using measurements, photographs or other reference information.

How straightforward that is depends on the model and the changes required. A simple size adjustment can be very different from redesigning part of an object or recreating something from scratch.

10. Where can I find a 3D file for something I want printed?

There are thousands of 3D-printable designs available online, both free and paid.

We've put together a Find a File page with some of the places you can search for a design that suits what you're looking for.

Once you've found something you like, send us the file or link and we can take it from there.

Can't find what you're looking for? Layered Creations also offers a custom design service. Tell us what you'd like to create and we can look at designing a 3D model specifically for your project.

Find a File

11. Can you print only one item, or is there a minimum order?

Yes, we can print one-off items.

One of the advantages of 3D printing is that it works particularly well for individual pieces, prototypes, personalised items and small quantities.

We can also produce more than one if you need a batch.

If your project requires custom design or modelling before printing, that part of the project will be included separately in your quote.

12. Can you make multiple items for an event, business, school or project?

Yes.

We can produce small batches for events, businesses, schools, creative projects and other applications.

The main things we need to know are how many you require, what the item is and when you need them. Because 3D printing happens one layer at a time and each print requires machine time, quantity and deadline can make a significant difference to what is practical.

Once we know what you need, we can work out whether the quantity and turnaround time are achievable.

Still Not Sure?

You don't need to understand 3D printing before contacting Layered Creations.

If you already have a file, send it through.

If you've found something online, send us the link.

And if all you have is an idea, tell us what you're trying to create.

Sometimes the most interesting projects start with a very simple question:

“Can we print this?”

That's where we start figuring it out.
